Meet Our 2016 Surgical Resident & Interns

This summer, we are excited to welcome Surgical Resident Dr. Sam Gilbert and Surgical Interns Dr. Eric J. Martinez and Dr. Lindsay Parker to our program. At Veterinary Surgical Centers, we are passionate about advancing veterinary education through our Surgical Residency and Internship Programs. With an emphasis on mentorship, hands-on learning, and journal review, our curriculum helps to prepare individuals for an impactful career in small animal surgery.

Meet our Resident and Interns:

Sam Gilbert, VMD, Surgical Resident
Dr. Sam Gilbert earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics from the University of Pennsylvania. He stayed on at Penn, where he earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2015. After veterinary school, Dr. Gilbert completed a one-year small animal rotating internship at Hope Advanced Veterinary Center in Vienna, VA. His research interests include hip dysplasia, osteoarthritis, and medical devices.

Dr. Gilbert is currently continuing his specialty training with a three-year surgical residency.

Originally from Vienna, he now lives in Arlington, VA, with his wife and their cat Calvin.

Eric J. Martinez, DVM, Surgical Intern
Born and raised in tropical Puerto Rico, Dr. Eric Martínez attended the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez campus, where he took part in multiple research projects. He earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Veterinary Medicine. During his time at LSU, he participated in National Institutes of Health-funded research, and presented at The North Carolina State University Summer Scholars. He also developed a passion for Tiger football (Geaux Tigers!), crawfish, and other delicious Cajun food.

After earning his DVM, he successfully completed a small animal medicine/surgery rotating and small animal surgical internship in South Florida. His interests include orthopedic and minimally invasive surgery, including emergency medicine. His long-term goal is to obtain a residency and become a board-certified surgeon. He is currently continuing his specialty training with a one-year small animal surgical internship.

In his free time, Dr. Martínez enjoys spending time with his wife, their two beautiful daughters, two dogs, and a cat. He also enjoys diving, sailing, and enjoying outdoor activities.

Lindsay Parker, DVM, Surgical Intern
A native of Alberta, Canada, Dr. Lindsay Parker graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor’s of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences from McGill University in Montreal, QC, Canada. She earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2015 from Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, SK, Canada. In 2016, she completed a rotating internship at the Veterinary Emergency Clinic in Toronto, ON, Canada.

Dr. Parker is a die-hard “Alberta farm girl,” where her family breeds purebred Suffolk sheep and used to raise purebred Hereford cattle.
She is currently continuing her specialty training with a one-year small animal surgical internship.

She lives in Virginia with her pets, two Sphynx and a Dalmatian.
